AC Recharge vs. Leak Repair: A Stamford Mechanic's Take

A recharge feels like a fix and sometimes is one. But if the system is leaking, you will be back in the same spot by July. Here is how we tell the difference.

When the AC blows warm, the first instinct is to top off the refrigerant. Sometimes that is the right answer. More often the refrigerant left because something failed, and adding more without fixing the leak is pouring money into a hole.

When a recharge is enough

If the system has never been serviced, the car is several years old, and there are no oily residue spots at the compressor or fittings, a slow permeation loss over years is normal. A recharge with the correct amount of refrigerant brings it back.

When you need a repair

  • The AC worked great last summer and is dead this summer — that is a leak, not normal loss.
  • You see oily residue on a fitting, hose, or the compressor clutch.
  • The compressor cycles on and off rapidly because the pressure is too low.
  • A recharge held for a week or two and then went warm again.

The honest path

We pressure-test the system and find the leak before adding refrigerant. One customer came in with a warm AC and left with a single bad seal replaced, not a whole compressor swap. That is the difference between a recharge and a repair done right.
